Kangundo Workshops and Visits

I kicked into high gear today as the team photographer/videographer.

First I went on six home visits to some families who have special needs kids. Lots of stories including:

       - grandparents caring for three grandkids and selling off property to keep providing for them, to the extent that we had to walk through a neighbor's field to get to their house since there is no longer any direct access from the road. Fortunately this guy was friendly – or at least he acquiesced to our presence.

     - a woman who’s had 10 children, three of whom are special needs kids.

     - a mom caring for her autistic daughter who’s in her 30s. Mom can’t leave her alone so takes her along on all errands and work projects.

     - parents with a schizophrenic 35-year-old son who is on lifetime meds which keeps him calm but unable to create a life for himself.

And more... Every family we visited were so gracious in welcoming us, dusting off chairs for us to sit on, answering all our questions and giving us warm sendoffs.

Throughout the day, Maggie led a floral arrangement workshop that was a huge hit. Based on the interest and excitement of the women, we think that a floral arrangement business for funerals as well as for other events is a very real possibility of a micro-enterprise that will be started here.

Another day-long activity was the sewing workshop led by Ann and Ingrid. They’ve bought a bunch of fabric here (fortunately they both LOVE to shop!) and are sharing ideas and patterns of what can be sold here in Kenya and what can be sold in the U.S.

Hope to have more pics tomorrow when the internet is more cooperative :-)
